Freewinds Tradition of Community Outreach
Since 1988 the Freewinds Motor Vessel has sailed the Caribbean, bringing a message of friendship and caring to officials and citizens of 44 island ports.
A unique cruise ship, the Freewinds serves as a spiritual retreat for Scientology churches and Scientologists from around the world where the most advanced spiritual counseling of the Scientology religion is ministered. The Freewinds also serves as an international meeting place, holding religious conventions and seminars for Scientology staff and parishioners.
But the Islands know the Freewinds staff in an entirely different way—as men and women who have a commitment to the well being of the people of the Caribbean, and who always go out of their way to help.
Involvement and Caring
L. Ron Hubbard, the founder of the Scientology religion said, “Save the child and you save the nation” and the Freewinds takes this to heart, inviting numerous civic organizations and youth clubs to use the ship's facilities free of charge for fundraising events.
The crew love entertaining the many school children from around the islands who visit the ship.
A “Hearty Thank You”
St. Vincent and the Grenadines Save the Children Fund (Vinsave) sent a “Hearty Thank You” to the Freewinds for “their tremendous contribution … to Vinsave” after the ship hosted a fundraising concert aboard and donated books and writing materials to the charity.
General Manager of Goddards Shipping and Tours Ltd., Tracey Shuffler, called the Freewinds' community involvement “exceedingly unusual.”
Ludwig Alpers, the Port Captain of the Freewinds said, “We will continue to do benefits and fundraising activities because we love the Islands and the people here. We see the Islands as our home and nothing makes us happier than to contribute to what we think is the most beautiful and hospitable place on earth.”
